SIX PRELUDES ON THE LIFE OF JOB

Six Preludes on the Life of Job Cover

Written at the recommendation of Dr. Daniel Landes, to whom the set is dedicated, Six Preludes on the Life of Job  dramatically portrays the story of the eponymous figure as accounted in the Book of Job. The first movement portrays two main themes to illustrate Job’s dual prosperity in industry and family. In the second movement, harp-like arpeggios and piercing high notes illustrate the introduction of the contest for Job between the Lord God and Satan. The third movement directly correlates to the first, only this time all of Job’s prosperity is being taken from him. Thus, the fourth movement captures Job’s well-known prayer lamenting his own birth. In response, the minimalist grandeur of movement five illustrates the sweeping grandeur of creation as God shows Job just how miniscule humans really are. Finally, movement six begins with Job’s humble reply to his Lord, but through a building ostinato pattern, portrays the abundant return of Job’s wealth.
